Sam Johnson is the founder of ‘Stab’, a popular surf magazine that showcases the extreme culture of surfing and tells real stories about real people. He is now planning to launch a new print publication called ‘Grind’, which will focus on the sport of skydiving. This quarterly magazine will feature inspiring stories of individuals who have achieved great things in the skydiving community.
Problem
The client has requested an experimental design and layout for the cover and first feature article of the inaugural issue of ‘Grind’. The design should reflect the daring spirit of extreme skydiving. The first issue will feature female skydivers sharing their perspectives on the sport, including their struggles to gain recognition and break new boundaries. The target audience for the magazine are young enthusiasts of extreme sports who are looking for insights into the gritty lives of these athletes.
Solution
The article’s design and layout are inspired by the thrilling and unapologetic experience of skydiving. The usage of negative space contributes to the dynamic feel of the layout. The treatment of images is inspired by the skydiver’s sense of calmness and serenity while in the sky. The images have been transformed using gradient and saturation effects to create a vivid, abstract and surreal atmosphere to the article.
